The Parts of Speech

Author: Mridul Jain, Class VI B

Grammar is really tough for sure
There are very few, a handful, that adore
This world of words, spellings and letters
That has brought a frown to many faces, baffled several others.
Allow me to take you into this plethora of syntax and phonology
That albeit not cherished by everyone, has proved to be a necessity
So let us, being rather acquiescent, delve into grammar and learn the parts of speech
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.
Three little words that we often see
Are articles a, an, and the.
A noun’s the name of anything,
Be it house or garden, hoop or swing.
To supersede the nouns, the pronouns stand—
Her head, your face, his arm, my hand.
Adjectives describe and tell us the kind of a noun,
As in great, small, pretty, white or brown
Verbs state something to be done—
To read, count, sing, laugh or run.
How these actions are done the adverbs tell,
As slowly, quickly, ill or well
Conjunctions join the words together,
As men and women, wind or weather.
The preposition stands before
A noun, as in or through a door.
The interjection shows surprise,
As in Oh! How pretty, ah! How wise!
These in all form the eight parts of speech, I must say
Who all have various tasks assigned, many qualities to portray.
