Movie Review – Whiplash

Avadhi Dass, Class XIIStudent Editor, 2017-18

This is by far the most encouraging movie I have ever seen. It exudes determination and in a very novel manner, conveys the importance of hard work. It rightly depicts that nothing is unachievable if there is a fire inside you. If you are driven by passion, no road/mountain is insurmountable.
The story revolves around a twenty-something man named Andrew Neiman (Miles Tiller), who enrolls in a music conservatory to fulfil his dream of becoming an ace drummer (one like Buddy Rich). The story depicts his relation with his mentor/instructor Terence Fletcher (JK Simmons) who is extremely disciplined and strict in conduct and makes his studio work really hard and long. He is frank, sometimes abusively so, and leaves no space for mistakes. He is extreme and personifies the ‘All or Nothing’ concept.
Terence is the epitome of perfection in the film whereas Tiller as Andrew shows great purpose and truly absorbs himself in the character.
The Jazz symphonies in the film add to its dynamism. The movie is a must watch for people who like Jazz and live performances and enjoy the thrill of uncertainty.
Holding true to its name, the movie has some gripping twists and sharp turns indeed!
Whiplash holds many surprises, it is compelling yet simplistic and is bound to keep you stuck to your seats. It’s a must watch for anyone passionate about anything, of any age, anywhere around the world.
