Riddhi Singhania, Class IX D
The day was dark
No sound of a lark
As I was passing through a meadow
When suddenly I saw a hut
But its door was shut
So I peeped in through the window.
I saw a woman
An old woman
Sitting on a wobbly chair
She was knitting and knitting
And knitting
And for nothing else she did care.
Her face was wrinkled, hair all grey
She was knitting and knitting
As if waiting for May
She would meet her grandchildren
Give them the presents
And cheer all day!
The sky grew black
And I heard a crack
The old lady opened the door
And a wide smile she wore
She gave me a present in a box
And I saw they were a pair of socks!
She pressed the box against my hands
And I couldn’t refuse her
But just said thanks
She smiled again
And I smiled at her
And I started off for home
Carrying an affectionate feeling throughout the room.
