What Chemistry Taught Me

Manvi Upadhyay, Class X B

In chemistry we learn about the three states of matter-the solids, the liquids and the gases. It was just 4 hours ago when I realised what it actually teaches us.
We all have mass and we all occupy space. This means, we matter. We sometimes are rigid, sometimes we are not. Just like the liquids we take whatever ‘shape’ we are asked to by the society. We are all attracted towards each other. This force of attraction is what you and I have termed as ‘love’. We all are the fluids, filling up and taking up the shapes and sizes the people want us to. We are all spaced from one another. We are all falling apart from each other.
The three states of matter define life. The solid state being the state in which you are ‘held’ together. The state in which you and your ideas are fixed. There is hardly anyone to bother you or to change you. Then comes the society in the form of ‘heat’. They ask us to bring about some changes in ourselves, and without even thinking once we just do it. Sometimes, this whole society effect is so strong that from the ‘rigid’ person you used to be, you become completely helpless and just go around not knowing where you are going, just like the gases.
What I’m trying to say is, be the solid. Don’t change because someone asked you to. Don’t let society’s force drift you apart from yourself. All these people out there will change with time. Just because your outer body is not as pretty as your friend’s doesn’t mean you need to change yourself. Just because one woman is prettier than you doesn’t mean you are not. We don’t count the outer beauty. We are pretty on the inside. We can’t fall apart again and again. Together we matter. Together we are one.
